Why Building Your Network Marketing Business Is Like Playing Football

Since it’s the start of football season, I thought I would post something fun today that I’ve discovered.  One of my entertainment passions is football, because I love the strategy behind it, and the dynamics of the sport as well.  I know not everyone agrees, but I enjoy it when I can squeeze out some free time.  Network marketing business is like football in many ways, which may be another reason why I love it so much.

Network marketing business has some similarities to pro football.

There are several reasons why network marketing business is like football:

1) It takes time to develop a rhythm

Just like network marketing business, football takes time to create a viable chemistry to generate success.  In football, you can’t just sign 60 football players and immediately go in to the regular season and expect everyone to click and be on the same page.  It’s going to spell disaster for that team if you were their coach.  In network marketing business, you can’t just sign the dotted line and expect checks to immediately roll in.

Success takes time, and the way it happens is through thorough practice and application, as well as sound theory and timing.  This is true of both football and network marketing business.

2) Don’t abandon your playbook when you fall behind

In football, one team will be down in the game, and require urgency to score points to win.  That doesn’t mean that they should abandon their game strategy though.  There’s certain times when it’s clear and obvious that the only way to win is to pass the ball and score quickly.  However, when it’s still early in the game and you are down, you have to chisel away at the lead your opponent has one score at a time.  And the way to do that is to continue to stick to your gameplan of mixing up your run and pass plays and doing every little detail well.

In network marketing business, not everything you do will result in success.  That doesn’t mean that you should give up on your strategy so quickly.  Just because a strategy doesn’t pay off immediately does not mean it is not effective.  You just need to complete daily actions and tasks and build up a reputation or persona and do every little detail of that strategy well to make it pay off in the long run.

Blogging is a great example.  You can’t just create a blog, write one post, and expect everyone to fall over themselves trying to figure out what you do and how to join you in your business.  You have to be diligent and set out to post consistent articles for a period to time to establish your credibility and fan base.

3) Script your first 15 plays

OK, so this is a bit more technical but when pro football teams run a West Coast offensive scheme, they script their first 15 plays.  That means that rain or shine, whatever happens, they run those first 15 plays.  They use it to gauge their opponent’s defense, as well as gauge the effectiveness of their own offensive strategy.

In network marketing business, scripts are so important.  You have to use scripts in the beginning of your business to gauge your own skill set.  You also need scripts to figure out to manage conversations with prospects so that you can be efficiently getting them to the next level of the recruiting process.  Scripts are training wheels at first.  When you are experienced and smart enough to control and guide conversations like a script but without using one, then the training wheels come off.  You don’t rely on scripts as much anymore; more so you just stick to a topic and drive the conversation.
